Men and Women Like YOU At Work in the
Construction Zone
A
tropical setting, physical activity and a lasting impact - all things
that come with serving on a construction team during a visit to ACE.
Consider stretching your mind and muscles by helping us build for the
future, literally! Don’t worry that you lack necessary job skills. Our
Jamaican Contractor, Dennis, does on-the-job-training.
Because we live
in a hurricane -prone area of the world, ACE uses 100% block, steel
and concrete to construct our buildings. When we invest in the people
and their buildings, we want to make sure we are building structures
that will last a lifetime and hold up even when the toughest storms
pass over the island. YOU can help us do that!
Unfortunately, here
in our parish it’s not as simple as picking up the phone and calling
a concrete company to deliver yards of concrete to our worksite.
We
make concrete the way our grandmothers made cookies…. from scratch.
First the sand, the stone, then the cement; make a hole in the middle,
pour in the water, then mix like crazy! You don’t need previous
experience to mix and carry concrete. Or maybe you’ll be a block layer
awaiting the “mix and carry” volunteers bringing the concrete you need
to lay the next block. Your efforts could be helping us complete a
lunchroom at one of our schools, build a media center at a primary
school or get a family into a house they’ve been saving for over the
past 10 years.
Color our
World…Pick up a Brush
Could
you use a little more color in your life? We could always use some
help giving our buildings a fresh coat of paint. How about some
Shocking Purple, Hint of Mint, Smurf Blue or Pepto Pink? Those are
some of our paint colors. (Our volunteers named the last two!) Since
Jamaica is a nation of many colors, we like the idea that Jamaicans
use a variety of colors to express themselves on their walls.
Is it quick? No. Is
it hard? Yes. Is it a way to build relationships in the community and
get to know your teammates? You bet and that’s what A.C.E. is all
about. Don’t worry, the building will get finished….more than likely
after you leave. You’ll be part of a project bigger than you and your
team. You’ll meet new American and Jamaican friends and enjoy an
eye-opening change of pace from your daily routine.
How can I serve on
one of these ACE teams?
Just call Wendy Hall,
our Stateside Coordinator and she will answer all your questions.
Interesting Fact: Wendy was one of our first interns with ACE back in
1992!
Wendy can be reached
